Rick Owens' journey into furniture design began in 2007 when he collaborated with the legendary Italian furniture manufacturer, Cappellini, on a limited-edition collection. This initial venture allowed Owens to explore his design sensibilities beyond the realm of fashion, introducing his distinctive aesthetic to the world of interior design.
Inspired by the brutalist architecture of the 1960s and 1970s, Owens' furniture designs embraced raw materials, sculptural forms, and a minimalist approach. His early collections featured striking pieces like the "Petrified Wood" table, which combined the rough texture of natural petrified wood with sleek, geometric lines.
As his reputation in the fashion industry continued to grow, Owens began to further expand his furniture offerings. In 2012, he collaborated with renowned French furniture manufacturer, Domeau & Pérès, to create a collection of leather seating. This collaboration showcased Owens' ability to incorporate his signature design elements into functional furniture pieces, emphasizing the use of luxurious leather and clean, minimalist lines.
In 2015, Owens unveiled his "Rick Owens Furniture" exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. The exhibition showcased his most significant furniture pieces up to that point, providing a comprehensive look at his evolving design aesthetic. The exhibition solidified Owens' status as a notable figure in the world of furniture design, drawing attention from both the fashion and design communities.
Over the years, Rick Owens has continued to collaborate with esteemed manufacturers and designers, expanding his furniture offerings and experimenting with new materials and forms. He has partnered with brands such as Poltrona Frau, Galerie Philia, and Veiled, further establishing his presence in the world of furniture design.
Today, Rick Owens' furniture collections encompass a wide range of pieces, including chairs, sofas, tables, lighting fixtures, and storage units. His designs continue to reflect his signature style, characterized by the juxtaposition of raw and refined materials, sculptural forms, and a minimalist aesthetic.
The development of Rick Owens' furniture has been marked by a consistent commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging traditional design norms. His ability to seamlessly merge the worlds of fashion and furniture design has garnered him international recognition and a loyal following among design enthusiasts and collectors.
As Owens continues to evolve as a designer, his furniture collections remain highly sought after for their innovative and captivating designs, cementing his position as a visionary in the world of furniture design.
